Signs You May Have Tooth Decay

Tooth decay can be difficult to detect without a routine check-up.   X ray and certain instruments are used to detect decay at a dental visit but other symptoms in everyday life can help identify an issue. Signs of tooth decay can include:

  1. Sensitivity
  2. Toothache
  3. Discolouration
  4. Bad breath

Sensitivity

Sensitivity when eating things such as ice cream or a hot meal can indicate there is tooth decay present, this means there is damage to the enamel layer of the tooth. In turn the nerves are exposed causing hot and cold foods to cause discomfort or pain in the mouth. It is important to address the sensitivity before the decay spreads and causes a much larger issue.

Toothache

It is difficult to ignore a toothache as it is one of the worst pains known to man, but it is also a good indication that decay is present in the mouth. When presented with a toothache decay can be visible or it can be hidden under the enamel layer. Painkillers and antibiotics may only temporarily aid in relief but the pain will return. It is important to deal with the root of the issue.

Discolouration

Discolouration of teeth, such as dark or grey, could be an indicator that there is an underlying issue of tooth decay. Tooth discolouration could also be harmless staining from everyday foods but it is important to get the issue checked before it causes any further concerns.

Bad breath

If no matter how hard you brush or floss there is still an unwanted odor it may be tooth decay. As decay is caused by plaque and bacteria left on the teeth, if food and plaque is left in the decayed areas it can cause a bad smell coming from the mouth. Keeping a decayed area clean can be quite difficult as can cause a continuous food trap. Seeing your dentist to amend the area will prevent any further food becoming caught and make cleaning easier.
